On Friday a member of the Thomas Hardy Society, Byron Silver,  visited Wey Valley Academy . Byron facilitated a session around two poems by Hardy from the 1912-13 love poetry concerning the life and death of his first wife Emma Lavinia Gifford. Both The Shadow on the Stone and The Voice are important poems in the collection and are elegiac in tone . A class of Year 10 GCSE students attended the session and were asked to write a poem or prose piece about loss . One student said ‘it was an informative workshop concerning the context of Hardy’s life and influences’. Mr Chutter , Head of Performing Arts and Teaching and Learning Challenge Lead, exclaimed ‘my thanks to Byron Silver for visiting our school to inspire our students to read and to write in the style of Thomas Hardy – it was a highly engaging session’.
