MP Lloyd Hatton oversees student debate

As part of UK Parliament Week, Wey Valley School was honoured to welcome MP Lloyd Hatton, who joined us to witness an engaging and thought-provoking student debate on the timely topic of assisted dying—a matter set to be debated in Parliament next week.

Students Matilda, Saskia, Josh, Amber, Lenni, Joanne, Jamie, Nate, Jack, Scarlet, Ava, Mia, Fabian, and Zack participated in the debate, showcasing their critical thinking, articulate arguments, and respect for differing opinions. The session concluded with the "for the bill" team narrowly winning, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the complexities surrounding the issue. The students were coached by Laura Bucke , Eileen Harding and Mark Damon Chutter (Head of Performing Arts).

At the end of the debate, MP Lloyd Hatton shared his perspective, confirming that he will be supporting the bill next week and explaining the reasons behind his decision. His insights added a real-world dimension to the debate, giving students a unique opportunity to see how their ideas can influence national conversations.

This visit provided an incredibly valuable opportunity for all involved, promoting active citizenship and the importance of informed discussion on complex issues. One student said 'today has taught me about debating an important issue and how to use language effectively'. Mark Chutter, Head of Performing Arts, said 'our thanks to Lloyd Hatton MP for this wonderful opportunity for our students here at Wey Valley'.
