Mayor of Weymouth, talks to students
Year 8 pupils here at Wey Valley Academy were inspired by a talk delivered by the Mayor of Weymouth, Councillor Jon Orrell. Mr Orrell explored the history of the role of the Mayor in the town in representing the needs of the community. Dr Orrell said 'as a doctor I could see that people need clean air, pure water, warm homes and local food. So, to bring about a better life for my patients I wanted to join the council to improve housing standards, develop green spaces and places for healthy exercise.
The Mayor then continued to deliver his talk but in his mayoral robes and regalia whilst continuing to explore the history of Weymouth. Then our Year 8 pupils asked some inquisitive questions such as 'what is your opinion regarding the Portland Incinerator? ' The discussion and debate was lively and engaging in arousing the intellectual curiosity of our students here at Wey Valley Academy. The importance of being a responsible citizen and civic duty was explored during the session. Mr Chutter, Head of Performing Arts , said 'my thanks to Councillor Jon Orrell, the Mayor of Weymouth, for this fascinating talk today enabling our pupils to consider the needs of their community here in Weymouth'.
