Students Mark Holocaust Memorial Day

Wey Valley Academy commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day with other educational establishments at the Corn Exchange in Dorchester hosted by the Town Council. The theme for the event was 'Bridging Generations', focusing on passing lessons to the youth of today and reflecting on, or lighting a candle for, victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.
The students included Year 7 and Year 10 . The Year 7 pupils had created art around the theme as a result of a workshop delivered by Lorna Brunstein, a second generation survivor of the Holocaust. Brunstein draws from her family history and through the themes of identity, memory, loss and displacement. Brunstein is passionate about human rights and social justice.
Brunstein said ' the students at Wey Valley Academy created some poignant and creative work in relation to the mass genocide of the Holocaust'. A Year 7 pupil said 'my painting tells a story of suffering and of persecution. There are many people in the world being persecuted still'. Head of Performing Arts, Mark Damon Chutter said 'the event in Dorchester was a moving act of remembrance - an act of respect'. As Anne Frank once said in 1944 'how wonderful it is that no one has to wait even a minute to start gradually changing the world!'.
