Thomas Fowell Buxton Society talk to students
Year 8 students were privileged to attend a talk delivered by Carl Whitehouse of the Thomas Fowell Buxton Society. Buxton lived in Weymouth and was a pioneer in the abolition of slavery during the nineteenth century. Mr Whitehouse really did contextualise the period with reference to Buxton in Weymouth. Alongside this, Mr Whitehouse alerted the students to the Buxton Memorial Monument in Netherton Road in the town.
One student said 'this was such an interesting talk and we are studying the abolition of slavery in our History lessons'. Mark Damon Chutter, Head of Performing Arts and Diversity Council Lead, said ' my thanks to Mr Whitehouse and to the Buxton Society for this talk to celebrate Black History Month - it has really inspired our students'.
