Visible Women UK 'Gendered Statues

Wey Valley welcomed Dr Anya Pearson , Head of Fashion at the Arts University, Bournemouth. Pearson directed the crowdfunding and concept for the palaeontologist Mary Anning statue in Lyme Regis and will be unveiling the statue of LGBTQ+ writer Sylvia Townsend Warner in Dorchester in December.
Throughout the innovative session Dr Pearson explored a feminist perspective on statues in this country as the chair of Visible Women UK. Pearson said 'the visibility of women through sculpture is key to them becoming role models for the youth today - they are of critical importance to our landscape'. One Year 8 pupil exclaimed' I was not aware of how few female statues there are and this has heightened my awareness '.
Mark Damon Chutter, Head of Performing Arts, said 'this is an innovative partnership with Anya Pearson and the Arts University, Bournemouth. We look forward to developing this relationship further throughout the academic year'.
